Internet for Children

According to research in 2011, almost six out of ten children ages 3 to 17 used internet at home (58%), nearly six times as many in 1977 (11%). True indeed, internet technology has expanded rapidly in the last two decades. Now, internet-enabled device include not only computers, but also television, tab, handphones and many others that made how easy for children to access the internet. There are three important points that we should know about children and internet, like why do children surf the internet, it’s impact for them, and the parent’s role about internet.

Children use internet in different ways and for different reasons depending on their age, circumstances, interests, or studies. But most of them use internet for social networking, playing games, and watching videos. Even though internet can be a wonderful resources and entertainment, it also can be dangerous if misused.

The impact of internet for children can be seen clearly in physical and psychological aspects. For examples, children can accidentally open a website that contains violence or porn that can bring negativity in their psychological outcomes. Chat rooms can be used to lure children into offline meeting which is physically dangerous. Furthermore, time spent with internet computer may take children’s activity and increasing the risk of obesity, eye, and back problems.

So this is where parents take place. Parents have a very important role to watchover their children when using internet. They have responsibility to keep controlling of what their children can see, meet, and share, and there will be less risk for an unwanted things to happen to their children.

Now we know that internet usage can be both beneficial and risky for children. The children’s education and parent’s role become important factors to keep the children safe. As internet technology continues to grow, safeguards used today may be ineffective tomorrow. We muust give the best efforts and protection for the children since all of us want a bright future for them.
